Vision Care and Medical Eye Care Are Different

Routine eye exams are often covered by vision insurance. Visits to diagnose, monitor, or treat an eye condition may be billed through your medical insurance.

Vision Insurance Helps Support Routine Eye Care

Vision plans are designed to help cover routine eye care and vision correction. Depending on your plan, benefits may include comprehensive eye exams, prescription lenses, contact lens benefits, or allowances toward eyewear.

Vision insurance is commonly used for appointments such as:

  • Annual eye exams
  • Prescription updates
  • Routine contact lens evaluations
  • Eyewear benefits

Medical Insurance Supports Medical Eye Care

Not every eye appointment is considered a routine vision exam. If your visit is focused on diagnosing, treating, or monitoring an eye condition, your medical insurance may apply instead of your vision benefits.

Medical insurance may be used for visits involving:

  • Dry eye disease
  • Eye infections
  • Eye allergies
  • Glaucoma management
  • Diabetic eye care
  • Macular degeneration
  • Emergency eye care
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Other medical eye concerns

Diagnostic testing, including OCT imaging, retinal imaging, visual field testing, and other medically necessary evaluations, may also be billed through your medical insurance when appropriate.
